About Hamburg

Hamburg is a northern German major port city situated on the banks of Elbe and Alster rivers. The city lies on the estuary of the River Elbe surrounded by many canals, lakes and small dams, as a result Hamburg has more than two thousand bridges.

Hamburg was severely destroyed during World War II, so most of the historical monuments were restored after the war. The city is dominated by copper-clad roofs and brick architecture which is typical for northern Germany. Most famous historical landmarks with such architecture are the Townhall (19th Century, Neo-Renaissance), St. Peter’s Church (14th century, Gothic) and St. James’ Church (15th century, Gothic). Furthermore, Hamburg has many wonderful museums, such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle which is one of the largest art museums in Germany or Deichtorhallen Hamburg which is one of the largest contemporary art and photography museums in Europe. By the way, you will also find some of the museums in the historic Speicherstadt port warehouse area, where the neo-Gothic red brick warehouse buildings create a special atmosphere. Here you can find the Spicy’s Gewürzmuseum (museum of spices), the International Maritime Museum and the Miniatur Wunderland. When you get tired of the city bustle be sure to visit Hamburg’s beautiful parks such as Ohlsdorferfriedhof (cemetary and park), Schanzen park, Jenisch park and Planten un Blomen.

The best way to get to know the Hamburg harbor is at the Landungsbrucken which is the city’s main transport station. There are boats and ferries offering sightseeing tours around the harbor and city canals. One of the city’s sights is the bustling fish market (Fischmarkt) which is working only on Sundays. It also worth to visit the Chilehaus located in the Kontorhausviertel district and the historic 17th century merchants’ home on Deichstrasse. There are also cozy cafes and restaurants nearby where you can try traditional German sausages, stewed cabbage and local beer. By the way, the Reeperbahn street in the Pauli district is also known as the Red Lights district of Hamburg. It is one of the most important entertainment parts of the city with bars and nightclubs.
