About Porto

Port is a city and a port located in the northwest of Portugal on the banks of Douro River near the Atlantic Ocean. The city is called the capital of Port wine, because Port wine production was once started in the valleys of the Douro River and was shipped down the river to the suburbs of Porto.

The Port has a stunning Old Town with cobblestone streets, beautiful homes, outdoor cafes, wineries, and a New Town with modern buildings, huge bridges, squares and bustling nightclubs. The most famous historical monuments are the Old Town are the Porto Cathedral, the Clerigos church and the church of St Francis. In Porto New Town, you will find spectacular bridges over the Douro River, including the Maria Pia Bridge (architect Gustav Eiffel) and the Luis I Bridge which is recognised as the symbol of the city. On the other side of the river in the Vila Nova de Gaia city you can find companies which are producing Port wine and their restaurants where you can get acquainted with the Port wine production process. If you return to the centre of Porto you should visit the main street of Porto – Avenida dos Aliados which is famous for buildings with various architectural styles, the square Praca da Liberdade and the beautiful Camara Municipal do Porto. In addition, nearby you will find Sao Bento train station which is decorated with beautiful azulean tiles and one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores, Livraria Lello, which inspired writer J.K Rowling when she was writing Harry Potter books.

You will find beautiful sights not only in the city but also outside the city. For a day trip, you can choose the Douro River Valley, which can be reached by boat, train or car. The Douro River Valley has spectacular slopes with vineyards, olive trees and almond trees. While traveling through the Douro Valley it is worth to visit the Amarante, Pinhao and Lamego towns. Another great day trip idea could be Peneda-Geres National Park located north of Porto. Here you will discover stunning nature, ruins of old settlements and medieval castles of Castro Laboreiro and Castelo do Lindoso. In the evenings, after you return from day trips, you can stroll through the medieval streets of Barredo district or visit the Ribeiro district which is famous for its narrow streets and colourful cottages decorated with traditional tiles. In the Ribeira district you will also find many restaurants where you can try out traditional seafood dishes, a variety of cheeses, and the famous Port wine.

Weather in Porto is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, therefore summers are warm and winters are mild. Average temperature vary from 6° C in winter up to 25° C in summer. The best time to visit Porto is from April to October.

When choosing travel dates to visit Porto you should take into account tourist peak season which is between June and August, therefore, you could save money and avoid crowds in the shoulder months of April, May or September to October.
