About Eindhoven
Eindhoven is the largest city in the south of the Netherlands, located on the Dommel River. It is a city of design, high tech and information technology companies. Giant companies such as DAF and Philips are located in the city, and the city is famous for its annual festival of lights in November.
Eindhoven was heavily damaged during World War II, and most of the city buildings had to be rebuilt after the war. The city is dominated by modern architecture. In Eindhoven, the most famous building of modern architecture is Evoluon, which is a symbol of the city. It is a building resembling a flying saucer, built on the 75th anniversary of Philips company. Currently, it is a conference center. Another spectacular building is De Blob made of glass and steel which was designed by Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas. In addition to these beautiful buildings it is also worth to visit the People’s Pavilion and Vesteda Toren. There are also many interesting museums in Eindhoven. The most famous are the Philips Museum, the Van Abbemuseum, the DAF Museum, the Watermill at Kollen and the MU art space.
In this modern city of the Netherlands you can also discover buildings of old architecture. The most famous are the St. Catherine’s Church (Sint Catharinakerk), Saint Peter’s Basilica, Heeze Castle and Paterskerk. For a day trip, you can plan a trip to Barle-Nassau, 60 km from Eindhoven, which belongs to two countries, the Netherlands and Belgium. The city is famous for its complicated state border, which passes through various city blocks and buildings. After returning to Eindhoven, it is fun to stroll through De Markt, 18 Septemberplein and Catharinaplein squares, visit the artistic district of De Bergen, or take a walk in Rechtestraat, Stratumseind and Wilhelminaplein streets. Here you will find cozy cafes or restaurants where you can relax and taste local beer or traditional dishes such as Bitterballen (stuffed beef) or Stamppot (mashed potatoes with vegetables). Also, be sure to visit the La Trappe Brewery, which is more than 100 years old and is established in a monastery.
