About Krakow

Krakow is a beautiful royal city, the former capital of Poland, situated on the Vistula River. Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland, formerly an important trade centre, however, from the 20th century was one of the most important cities in Polish cultural, artistic and academic life. Today, Krakow’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is recognized as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

The most important part of Krakow is the cozy, pedestrian-friendly Old Town with many historical and architectural monuments. The most famous part of the city is Wawel, an architectural complex on Wawel Hill which is illuminated and looks spectacular during the night. Best known buildings of this complex are the Royal Palace (former residence of Polish kings) and the Cathedral (Polish rulers and other famous people are buried here). After descending from Wawel hill, it is fun to walk down the streets of the Old Town. Furthermore, one of the most interesting parts of the Old Town is the Kazimierz district. It is a former Jewish Quarter, with beautiful bazaar, eateries and taverns and the Jewish Museum in the Old Synagogue (interesting fact that Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List” was filmed here).

One of most popular tourist attraction in Krakow is the Main Square (“Rynek Glowny”), where the Market Hall stands (former cloth market originally called “Sukiennice”, now houses shops and the National Museum). Other popular sights are the Saint Mary’s Basilica, the Czartoryskich Museum (the oldest Polish Museum of Art and History opened in the 19th century) and the Jagiellonian University. In the evenings you can relax in the cafés or restaurants and enjoy traditional Polish dishes such as “Bigos” (sauerkraut stew with sausage), “Pierogi” (dumplings with various fillings), “Nalesniki” (pancakes with filling), “Sernik Krakowski” (cheesecake) or “Oscypek” (smoked sheep cheese).
