About Amman

Amman is the capital of Jordan, the largest city and the political and economic centre of the country. It is a colourful, contrasting and bustling city in the Middle East.

Amman is an old, historic city with stunning Roman and Byzantine historical monuments. One of the most famous monuments is the Amman Citadel on Jebel al-Qal’a hill, with the remains of a Roman temple, the ruins of a Byzantine church and the Umayyad Palace. The Jordan Archaeological Museum is now open here and the hill offers stunning views of the city. Another remarkably impressive structure which is worth a visit is the Roman Theatre, which is almost 2000 years old. In Amman you will also find magnificent mosques such as the King Abdullah I Mosque which is known for its bright blue dome and the Abu Darwish Mosque which is one of the most beautiful mosques in Jordan. In addition, the city has interesting museums such as the Jordan Folklore Museum, the Jordanian Museum of Popular Traditions, the Jordan Museum, the Royal Automobile Museum and more. In Amman, it’s worth strolling through the streets of the Old Town, for example in the Rainbow Street, where you can discover interesting shops, cafes and art galleries. On this street, we recommend trying Arab Coffee which is brewed strong, bitter, and with cardamom and tasting traditional dishes such as Mansaf (rice with lamb and yogurt on the cake) or Warak Enab (rice and meat wrapped in olive leaves).

Amman has many attractions not only in the city but also outside the city. For a day trip you can choose a trip to Wadi Mujib Canyon. It is a canyon which stretches for almost 70 kilometres with beautiful river which flows through the canyon. Here you can admire the beautiful red rock terrain and swim in the nearby Dead Sea. For your next day trip, it’s worth choosing a trip to the historical city of Petra. It is famous for rock-cut architecture and is also known as the Rose City due to colour of stone. Here you can explore beautiful temples, numerous tombs, theatres and monastery scattered over 250 square kilometres. Another day trip could be to the Wadi Rum desert where you can find red sand and spectacular tall caves. There are a variety of camel tours to explore desert, rock formations and red sand dunes. Amman is a wonderful city suitable for a week or weekend break.
