About Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg is a city founded in the 18th century by Peter the Great at the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. It is situated on the Neva River and is considered as the Venice of the North since it is built on swamp. The river ends in the city centre and connects a large number of water corridors which links more than 100 islands with 340 bridges.

Saint Petersburg is a cultural centre of Russia with impressive churches, museums, parks, palaces and beautiful bridges over the Neva River. There are many famous places to visit – the Catherine’s Palace and Park (palace is famous for its Amber Room), the Petergof (an ensemble of imperial buildings with parks and fountains) and the Winter Palace (former residence of the Russian Emperors). The most impressive churches in the city are the St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Savior on the Spilled Blood, the Kazan Cathedral. We also recommend visiting the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Peter and Paul Cathedral (where all the Russian tsars are buried). For a day trip you can choose to visit the island of Valaam, where you can find the Valaam Monastery and listen to the chants of choirs. In addition, the city has many beautiful museums such as the State Hermitage Museum, the Russian Museum (exhibits works of the most famous Russian painters), St. Petersburg History Museum and the Kunstkamera.

The main and most popular street in Saint Petersburg is Nevsky Avenue, which is famous for its beautiful architecture. On this street you will find many historical landmarks including the Eliseyev Emporium with spectacular interior. By the way, St. Petersburg is famous for the White Nights phenomenon (sunrises are early and darkness is never complete). During this period, open-air events and festivals take place in the city. Furthermore, it is also worth trying traditional Russian cuisine and tasting dishes such as Shchi (cabbage soup), Ukha (fish soup), Solyanka (soup), Pelmeni (dumplings), Pierogi (dumplings), and Blini (pancakes).
