About Madrid
Madrid is the capital of Spain. It is the largest city on the Mansanares River in the country with over 3 million people population. Madrid was founded by the Moors in the 9th century, building a fortress by the river. The fortress was inhabited and formed a city that grew, expanded and became the capital of Spain in the 16th century.
Madrid is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Europe. The Thyssen-Bornemisza galleries exhibit masterpieces of famous artists painters such as Claude Moone, Vincent Van Gogh, Edgar Dega, Pablo Picasso and others. Furthermore, in the city you can have a great time just strolling around the squares (Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Plaza de Cibeles) or parks (Retiro Park). For a break you can sit down and relax in bars, cafes or restaurants (Sobrino de Botin – the world’s oldest restaurant), tasting their traditional food and drinks. When choosing travel dates to visit Madrid you should take into account tourist peak season which is between June and August, therefore, you could save money and avoid crowds in the shoulder months of March to May or September to November.
