About Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, located at the foothills of Mount Medvednica by the Sava River. The city is made of two parts – the upper town (the Gornji Grad) which is situated on the hills and the lower town (Donji Grad) situated on the plains.

The city has many historical monuments, such as the Cathedral of Zagreb, the Church of St. Catherine, the Church of St. Mark Church, the Croatian National Theatre and many others. In the Trg bana Jelačića square, you will find many classicism, baroque and modernism style buildings. You should also visit the Kamenita vrata (Stone Gate) and the tower Lotrsac, which can offer a wonderful view of the city. Furthermore, there are many wonderful museums in Zagreb such as the City Museum, the Croatian Natural History Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Modern Gallery. In addition, Zagreb has many beautiful parks and squares such as the Maksimir Park, the Bundek City Park, the Zagreb Botanical Garden and others. It is also worth visiting the Zagreb Mirogoj cemetery, which were designed by architect Hermann Bolle and resembles a park.

For a day trip, you can go to Lake Jarun in the southwest of Zagreb which is a recreation area with various water activities, or explore the ethnographic village of Scitarjevo and the nearby ruins of Andautonia (Andautonia Archaeological Park) in the southeast of the city. For a next day trip, we recommend choosing Plitvice Lakes National Park which is 150 km south of Zagreb. It is a national park with stunning landscapes, 16 terraced lakes which are joined by waterfalls and cascades and a variety of plants and animals. In addition, as a day trip you can also choose to travel to the sunny beaches on the Adriatic coast and visit the towns of Pula, Motovun, Rovinj or Grožnjan. While in Croatia be sure to try traditional Croatian dishes such as Burek (flaky pastry with various fillings), Buzara (shellfish and crustaceans), Pašticada (sauerkraut), Sarma (cabbage rolls with minced meat) or local drinks such as Rakija (fruit brandy) and Pelinkovac (herbal liqueur).
