About Zadar

Zadar is a Croatian city located on the Adriatic coast. Zadar is a sunny city with a blue sea, beaches, great views and stunning historic landmarks.

All major sights and historical monuments of Zadar are located in the Old Town. The entrance to the Old Town is through the 16th-century Land Gate. A tour of the Old Town is worth starting with the 5 Wells Square (Trg pet bunara) which is located next to the gate. These five wells have survived since the 16th century and they provided water for the city during sieges. Walking towards the central part of the Old Town, you will find the People’s Square, Narodni trg, which is the centre of the city from the Renaissance to the present day. In the central part of the Old Town, next to the ruins of the Roman Forum, you can beautiful historical landmarks such as the Zadar Cathedral, the Church of St Donatus, the St. Mary’s Church, St. Simeon Church and others. Furthermore, on the waterfront of Old Town you will find a wide promenade featuring two stunning installations the Sea Organ and the Monument to the Sun which were designed by architect Nikola Bašic. Underneath the stairs of the promenade, the Maritime Organ (Morske orgulje) plays music according to the sea waves which hit them, and the Monument to the Sun (Pozdrav Suncu) is an installation made of glass plates, which lights up at night.

Zadar is ideally located for discovering the most important attractions of central Croatia. For a day trip, we recommend choosing one of the national parks such as the Paklenica, Plitvice Lakes or Krka. Here you can find beautiful nature, crystal clear lakes, waterfalls and cascades. Alternatively, for a day trip you can choose between Ugljan or Pasman islands which are covered with dense forests, vineyards, olive trees and have beautiful coastlines. For younger travellers we suggest choosing Pag island which has the longest beach in the Adriatic Sea and is particularly popular for those who enjoy active nightlife. If you are a fan of history you might choose the nearby cities of Split, Sibenik, Kornati or Nin which have quite important historical background. While in Croatia be sure to try traditional Croatian dishes such as Burek (flaky pastry with various fillings), Buzara (shellfish and crustaceans), Pašticada (sauerkraut), Sarma (cabbage rolls with minced meat) or local drinks such as Rakija (fruit brandy) and Pelinkovac (herbal liqueur).
