About Gdansk

Gdansk is a Polish port city located in the Gulf of Gdansk near the Baltic Sea. In the Middle Ages, Gdansk (formerly known as Danzig) was a thriving trading city and after World War I it became a free city. During World War II the city was completely destroyed, so the entire old town was rebuilt.

Gdansk has a beautiful Old Town with many narrow streets, small parks and houses with steep gable roofs. The most famous building is Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption of the Blessed, which also features a 500-year-old astronomical clock and the cathedral tower offers beautiful panoramic views of the city. The main historical monuments are located on the Royal Route. The road begins with the city’s Porta Alta gate (Brama Wyzynna), which used to be the city’s main gate. Further down the Dluga Street is the Long Market square, which houses many renaissance buildings, and in the middle of the square is the Neptune’s Fountain (Fontanna Neptuna, 17th century) and the Town Hall (Ratusz Glownego Miasta, Gdansk City History Museum). The road ends at Green Gate (Zielona Brama), the city’s largest gate. On the Royal Road you can also see the Golden Gate (Zlota Brama, 17th century), which is adjacent to the Court of St. George’s Brotherhood (Dwor Bractwa sw. Jerzego, 15th century), the Uphagen’s House (Dom Uphagena, 18th century), the Ferberhaus (Dom Ferberow, 16th century) and other historical landmarks. Turning into the old port, you will see the symbol of the city – the Zhurav (the Gdansk crane). Besides this symbol of the city you will find interesting museums such as the National Maritime Museum and the Museum of Second World War.

Gdansk can offer a variety of activities, such as boat trips on the Vistula River, guided, cycling or electric scooters tours. Those looking for authenticity should visit the Hala Targowa Market (12th century) or stroll through the streets of the Old Town, with many beautiful places, small shops, cafes and cozy eateries. One of the most beautiful streets of the Old Town is Mariacka, which with all its details has been restored from documents, photos and drawings. In the evenings you can relax in the cafes or restaurants and enjoy traditional Polish dishes such as “Bigos” (sauerkraut stew with sausage), “Pierogi” (dumplings with various fillings), “Nalesniki” (pancakes with filling), “Sernik Krakowski” (cheesecake) or “Oscypek” (smoked sheep cheese).
