About Prague

Prague is the largest city in the Czech Republic, located on five hills by the Vltava river. The city became the capital of the Czech Republic in the 10th century. Prague is an old and very beautiful city. The city centre is made up of 5 areas – the Mala Strana (a trade district founded in the 9th-12th centuries), the Stare Mesto (the old town from the 12th century), the Josefov (Jewish Quarter), the Hradčany (area earlier inhabited by castle servants) and the Nove Mesto (established in the 14th century, area where merchants and artisans lived).

Prague is rich in historical monuments. On the highest hill of the city stands Prague Castle complex (from 12th-13th centuries) with beautiful St. Vitus Cathedral (built in 14th-20th centuries). In the central square of Stare Mesto, the Town Hall tower has an astronomical clock (15th century). In the Hradčany district you should visit the Sternberg Palace (17th century, now the National Gallery) and the Strahov Monastery Library (12th century, 800-year-old library with a collection of 200,000 books). The Mala Strana and Stare Mesto are joined by the magnificent Charles Bridge, decorated with a late Gothic tower from the 14th century. The Josefov district is famous for it’s oldest Jewish synagogue (13th century) in Europe and the old Jewish cemetery (15th century), which is the largest of its kind in Europe. In the Nove Mesto you will find the National Theatre (19th century), the Wenceslas Square (in the Middle Ages here was a horse market), the National Museum (early 19th century) and the Dancing House (architects Frank Gehry, Vlado Milunic). By the way, it is worth visiting places related Prague’s famous residents (composers – Mozart, Smetana, Dvorak, writers – Kafka, Hashek and others).

Prague is a wonderful city with many historical monuments and sites, many of which survived the First and Second World Wars. The city has more than 10 large museums, as well as many theatres and galleries. In addition, the city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is fun to stroll through the old city streets, admire the views from the highest hill of the city, explore shops and galleries in the Golden Street or visit cafes and restaurants. Furthermore, you should definitely taste the country’s traditional dishes, such as potato soup or traditional roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, along with the great local beer.
