About Marseille

Marseille is the second largest city in France, located in the Gulf of Lyon, on the Mediterranean Sea. Marseille was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC. The city is one of the largest in France, situated on the seaside hills, bordering the Calanques massif in the south (lime rock formations in the bays and fjords, which form the coast with very beautiful white rock gorges). It is worth walking the narrow paths of this array, as the summit offers incredible views, and once you stroll down these paths you can swim in the blue sea. Marseille is a popular French holiday destination because of the warm weather throughout the year and the great beaches along the coast.

In Marseille you will find beautiful buildings of modern and historical architecture. Buildings of historical architecture include the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde (19th century), Cathedrale La Major (12th century), Palais Longchamp, Château d’If (castle located on the Frioul archipelago island). The best museums in Marseille are the MuCEM, the Marseille History Museum, the La Vieille Charité, the Musée Cantini, the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Musée Grobet-Labadié. It is also worth vistiing the Old Port of Marseille(Vieux Port part) or the Noailles market. Marseille is also famous for its modern architecture, and it is worth visiting the modern district of Joliette. In addition, the city is home to buildings designed by world famous architects such as Le Corbusier (Unité d’Habitation), Zaha Hadid (CMA CGM) or Keng Kuma (FRAC). Fuerthmore, we recommend walking around the shops in the Saint Ferreoi or La Canebiere streets, or strolling around in the narrow streets of the Le Panier district and exploring artists’ shops or boutiques. In the evening you can relax and enjoy French cuisine in the cozy cafes or restaurants around the Noailles district.

Marseille is a city filled with scent of sea. You should definately taste the extraordinary fish soup – Bouillabaisse. It is a fish stew originated in Marseille made of three kinds of fish and vegetables flavoured with saffron. In addition, you should also try local Marseille wines and the popular Pastis (aniseed alcoholic beverage). The city hosts many events – the Marseille Spring Carnival, the Five Continents Jazz Festival, and the Festival de Marseille (held June through July, with various cultural events, movie screenings, dance or music performances).
